Emotional intelligence is a basic prerequisite of leadership, even more so in times of transition. Here’s how leaders can improve their emotional intelligence to face the challenges that the next months will bring.
Work on Your Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the most basic manifestation of emotional intelligence. This trait can be defined as being conscious of one’s feelings, moods, and states of mind.
Being self-aware is important because understanding our own emotions is key to keeping stress in check and communicating with others without letting overwhelming emotions take the driver’s seat.
In order to be more self-aware this 2021, adopt a twofold strategy. First, make reflection a daily habit, setting aside time every day to think about episodes where emotions played a relevant role. However, you’ll need more than self-reflection to get an accurate picture of yourself, so seek honest feedback from people you trust to discover how others perceive you.
Hone Your Social Skills
Self-awareness sets the stage for the development of more concrete social skills that you need to thrive in the workplace.
- Influence. “Getting your way” in a positive sense takes finesse but also a high degree of insight into the motivations of others.
- Conflict-management. Dealing with conflict is an essential part of leadership. Learn to identify when you have to stand your ground when to acknowledge that a compromise is necessary.
- The ability to inspire. Providing your team with a vision that motivates them to go the extra mile is the difference between good and extraordinary leadership.
