Over the last several months our collective stress levels have soared, and they may reach even higher peaks during this holiday season. Learn what steps you can take to take care of yourself and stay centered and productive during the festive season.
Accept That This Is Year Is Different
We humans are creatures of habit. We find comfort in doing the same things over and over again, even more so when it comes to special occasions like the holidays.
The mere fact of disrupting our yearly routines may cause stress, so it’s important to remind ourselves and those around us that this is a year like no other. Yes, things will be different. And yes, at some point we may experience feelings of awkwardness or discomfort. But don’t forget that everything’s worth it if it makes us all a little safer.
Also, keep in mind that odds are that next year we’ll get to celebrate the holidays the usual way, so try to focus on enjoying a different experience this year.
Set Boundaries and Practice Self-Care
We know: One of the hallmarks of this year is that boundaries have been blurred. Our professional and personal lives are always within an inch of enmeshing. It’s precisely for that reason that setting boundaries is more important than ever.
Learn to know your limits. Whenever you feel that stress is becoming too taxing, give yourself permission to either take a pause, get some rest, or simply say no, depending on the circumstances.
If at some point you feel overwhelmed, consider talking about your feelings with someone you trust: a friend, a relative, a mentor, or a therapist.
Finally, stay connected with those you love in safe ways like phone calls, video calls, or text messages. And don’t forget a basic rule: In order to give, you must first take care of yourself.
