Fostering a creative environment while working remotely can be a daunting task. Stress and fatigue can stifle your team’s creativity, preventing them from generating new ideas when you need them most. That’s why today we bring you four ideas to help you run effective remote brainstorming sessions.
1. Keep Remote Brainstorming Sessions Short and Focused
Remote meetings can make people feel tired, and a tired person is unlikely to come up with creative ideas. Avoid “video call fatigue” by keeping sessions short (15 to 30 minutes) and by determining in advance the number of ideas you want to produce during the session. This way participants will stay focused on the task at hand instead of being distracted.
2. Use Shared Documents Before, During, and After the Session
Documents you can share online are a great tool to help you conduct remote brainstorming sessions. Use them before the session to provide participants with any material or notes they need to get up to speed. Also create a document to take notes in real-time during the session and make it available to everyone so that they can review deadlines, promises, and any discarded ideas they may want to polish later.
3. Keep Participants Engaged
One of the challenges of remote meetings is maintaining engagement. An easy way to ensure engagement is to assign roles to every participant in the brainstorming session. For example, a person may be in charge of taking notes, while others keep time or act as the voice of the customer. When everyone has a task to fulfill it’s easier to keep the session on track.
4. Have Fun
The most effective tip to increase engagement during remote brainstorming sessions is simple: Have fun.
Within reason, be open to any idea that can make the session more entertaining. From spur-of-the-moment jokes to music or gizmos you can use while you’re on camera, participants will appreciate a good laugh, which may even stimulate their creativity. In fact, research has shown that boosting people’s mood increases their likelihood of having “Eureka!” moments.
