Remote work is becoming increasingly common, and so are job interviews for remote positions. Resilience, resourcefulness, and great communication skills are some of the attributes you should look for in the new members of your team who will be working remotely.
The following questions will help you identify these traits in potential employees, so you can make an informed hiring decision.
Have you Worked Remotely Before?
Having previous experience working remotely is an interesting advantage nowadays, so you may like to encourage candidates who have already worked from home to tell you more about their experience. However, being new to remote work shouldn’t automatically disqualify a prospective employee. The next questions will help you evaluate their ability to adapt to the new circumstances of a different work environment.
Describe a Situation Where You Embraced a New System or Technology at Work
The answer to this question will allow you to understand how a candidate deals with change. As the last several months have made abundantly clear, the need to adapt may arise suddenly. For example, in less than a year the way we work and communicate has changed drastically. With more adjustments to be made, flexibility and adaptability will be indispensable skills across all industries in the months to come.
How Did You Handle Stress the Last Time You Felt Overwhelmed?
Along with change, unexpected setbacks will be a common occurrence over the next months. These two factors combined can stress even the more even-keeled person. That’s why it’s important to get a sense of how a candidate would react to last-minute changes and unexpected stumbling blocks. Remote working and communication challenges (see below) will continue to put our patience to the test, so it’s important to get a sense of a candidate’s resilience.
How Do You Use Adjust Your Communication Style According to Different Situations?
As mentioned earlier, communication is one of the keys to succeed in the remote workplace. Whether handling a video call or writing an email, a candidate should be able to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues. Finding the right tone for every medium, being an empathetic listener, and finding ways to stressing one’s point without coming across as overbearing are some of the communication skills that can prove extremely useful in a virtual work environment.
