If you feel like doing something healthy and fun this summer, there’s nothing like a nice hike. Fortunately for those who live in the Inland Empire there are plenty of nearby places for hiking. Anyone who’s interested in getting out to nature can find a hike that’s perfect for their experience and fitness level. Mt. Rubidoux in Riverside, CA is the ideal place for those who want to get a little exercise and get some great views of Riverside and the surrounding area at the same time.
In 1906, the Huntington Park Association purchased the property which is now known as Mt. Rubidoux. The association intended to build a road to the summit and develop the mountain as a park for the benefit of the city of Riverside. Over the years the summit has been adorned with several memorials starting in 1907 with a cross and tablet honoring Father Junipero Serra. Other popular attractions on the summit include the Testimonial Peace Tower and Peace bridge which were dedicated in 1925.
Today the park and its various trails are visited by thousands who want to get a little exercise while enjoying the views and a little nature so close to the city. The trails to the top are paved and you can even choose between a the longer 2-mile trail and the shorter but steeper 1-mile trail depending on how much exercise you want to get. Once at the top there are the before mentioned Peace Tower and Peace bridge to see and there are rocks to climb around on and markers to see as well as interesting vegetation, and it’s all topped off with some spectacular views of the surrounding area. The views from the summit offer some outstanding photo ops for photo buffs.
